Cinema Jenin
Built in the early 60's, Cinema Jenin was considered to be one of the largest and most impressive cinemas in Palestine. Hundreds of people attended it daily to watch films from the Arab world. Later on, it started presenting action films and American B movies until it was closed with the break of the first Intifada in 1987. Since then, the cinema was only used occasionally to hold weddings and other events.

Cinema Jenin is a consequence project of Ismaels decision to donate his son´s organs to Israeli children. His outstanding gesture of peace drew a lot of media attention from all over the world. In 2006 the Italian city Cuneo opens a culture centre for the children of refugee camp dedicated to Ishmael’s son Ahmed. The centre starts providing many activities among which film courses are given. After a while the children start thinking of producing their first short film, only to realize that they have no place to show it in since the only cinema in town is closed. That’s when they create the idea of making their own cinema.

A glimpse on the cinema can tell the grim story of the last 50 years of the economical and cultural deterioration of the Palestinian society. The large building in which it resides is crumbling with all its contents, yet one can still sense its days of glory.

Shadi, Gadir, Ahmad, Khalid, Saja and Mohammad are only few of many children and teenagers who are a part of Ishmaels centre which has become a place of refuge for them. Being born between the two Intifadas, they have witnessed and experienced unimaginable atrocities, Khalid (Ismael’s son) lost his little brother, Gadir’s grandfather was shot in the head in front of her eyes, Shadi watched his friend Ahmed taking three bullets in the chest. And then there is 12 year old Mohammad who has to help his mother in the shop since his father is an alcoholic and Saja who’s families’ hard grip forces her to stay home most of the time.

A documentary follows a parallel process where the children make a film about their lives, while taking part in reopening what would become their future stage.
