synopsis

This is an unknown chapter of the „Operation Barbarossa“, Hitlers invasion of Russia. In winter 1942 the German “Blitzkrieg was over. Hitlers troops were stucked in the mud of the Russian winter. Their supply-lines were cut. Support could come only from the Black Sea, which was completely under the rule of the Soviet fleet. One of the most secret WWII operations was put in action. More than 300 ships were transported overland from northern Germany down to Black Sea. Six of them were U-Boats. Their base was the Romanian harbour Constanta. In just a few weeks time the six U-boats began to storm the waters. All of a sudden things turned drastic for the Russians. Their once backyard became a hostile battleground. The Russian war ships from now on were blocked in the harbours. The ones who left, became easy prey for the German U-boats. But things changed rapidly. August 1944 brought an end to the “harbour crackers”. Russian troops destroyed the German base at Constanta. Only three of the u-boats managed to escape to the open water. Few days later the last backdoor Bulgaria was occupied by the Red Army. The U-Boats were trapped in Black Sea. With the last order of Dönitz in September 1944 the three u-boats had to destroy with their remaining torpedoes their former base Constanta and scuttle afterwards their submarines in vain of the Turkish Black Sea coast. In this last action a russian mine clearing boat with 300 people were sunk.
